In 1924, "in our time" was also published in Paris. It consisted of eighteen vignettes.
The presentation was unique in its use of lowercase throughout and lack of quotation marks. Each short piece of prose was laid out at the center of the page and surrounded by huge amounts of white space. The idea behind the design was to highlight the narrative brevity, abruptness, violence and tone. This was Hemingway's second published collection of writing.
"While the bombardment was knocking the trench to pieces at Fossalta, he lay very flat and sweated and prayed oh jesus christ get me out of here. Dear jesus please get me out. Christ please please please christ. If you’ll only keep me from getting killed I’ll do anything you say."
