Dostoevsky's Classic Novella
A man stares fiercely into a mirror, one eye slightly squinting. He sees candle flame reflected in his pupils. Peering into the fire and into the depths of himself he is terrified, disgusted. Looking deeper, he battles through cascading anxieties, loves, hatreds and finally comes to his revelation. He returns to his reflection and with mad, intense eyes, he smiles.
The crazed saint, the broken skeptic, the men and women of “the underground.”
In the 1860’s, Russia continued absorbing new ideas from Western Europe. Among these were arguments of religious philosophy and Utopian reform. Dostoevsky penned his argument among this nationwide discussion through this novella, Notes from the Underground. In it he challenges nihilism and rejects the ideals of a Utopian society. Utopias, he argues, are based on an assumption that everyone, everywhere, all the time, is going to do the right thing.
Through the Underground Man, he presents a character who does what he wants, regardless of the facts or logic. He is a character who may do the right thing according to society, but stares into the mirror and examines his motivations. Does he act in a Utopian manner because he’s a noble man? Or do we all have the ability to do what is right for ulterior, selfish reasons? So goes the struggle.
