Porcelain and Pink
F. Scott Fitzgerald
The fourth title in Lasting Echoes, a letterpress series celebrating short stories that endure.
About this Edition
Fitzgerald’s “Porcelain and Pink” is a brief comic play from 1920, first published in The Smart Set and later collected in Tales of the Jazz Age. It was never a quiet piece. Reviewers of the day dismissed it, and one reader famously complained to Fitzgerald himself about “stuff about girls in blue bathtubs.” It arrived when America’s old moral certainties were loosening, and its jokes depend on an audience straining to see what it probably should not. Beneath the farce sits a sharper idea: a woman placed on a stage as spectacle, watched and weighed while she resists being fully known. We include it in Lasting Echoes as a sly artifact of its era, and as a reminder of the cultural weight women have long carried simply by being observed.
